Poetry Contest Scams

Ponder this: you've just written a fine poem and you've heard that fine poetry can win BIG money, right? So you do an online search for poetry contests and at the the top of the search page, you find a contest touting $100,000 in annual prize money. Oh yeah! So you decide to submit your poem. A couple of weeks later, you get a letter in the mail saying YOUR poem has been excepted for inclusion in their next anthology slated for publication in the near future. You fall to your knees, thanking God for blessing you with this marvelous gift. Then you call your friends, kiss your spouse, run out and buy a new dress, all because they want you to present your fine poem at the Awards Ceremony in Washington , DC!

Have you done this?

Did you pay to have your precious work included in their cheap anthology? You know folks , some have paid big money and never got their anthology. Some folks have entered some of the worst poetry possible, and STILL received that acceptance letter in their mailbox. (See:You gotta read Wergle Flomp's poem for ILP

Poets beware of contest scams! The most notorious is Poetry.com aka: The International Library of Poetry, The National Library of Poetry, Watermark Press(UK), and International Society of Poets.
