Along the Shores of Withlacootchie

..............
...........................Along the shores of Withlacootchie
...........................roamed my husband and our dog.
...........................The two crept onward ever stealthy
...........................over ferns and fallen logs.

...........................Cypress knees and sandy pathways,
...........................through the woods Pete's nose did lead.
...........................Following through, my willing husband
...........................ambled on at gentle speed.

......................

..............Up around the bend, a clearing -
..............banks with trees hung past the shore.
..............Man and beast grew quite excited
..............for this sight must be explored!

..............Children played there by the water,
..............fishing poles and swimming wet.
..............Husband's eyes grew light with wonder
..............as he swiped at steaming sweat.

......................

.......................There before them on the sand-bank
.......................loomed a Cyprus tall and slim.
.......................Up the trunk was nailed a ladder,
.......................higher up hung rope from limb.

.......................Husband told the dog to sit there,
......................."Hold my shirt and just watch this!
.......................Pay attention to your master
.......................cuz THIS, you shouldn't miss!"

................................All the children cheered on husband
................................as he told them of his plan.
................................Then he grabbed the rope with gusto,
................................and climbed the bank like a man.

......................

..............Looking out he spied a gator
..............but by now it was TOO LATE!
..............for my husband's feet were running
..............as he lifted toward his fate . . .

......................

..............Sailing high he left the sand bank,
..............muscles rippling in his throw -
............................all his strength was now provided
............................soaring toward that venturous blow.

.............................

.................

..............A girl scooped up a little skim rock,
..............shouting out so loud and clear,
............................"Don't be afraid! I'll save you now,"
............................and chunked the rock without fear!

......................

......................The child hit square the gator's head
......................and it rolled it's body away.
......................My husband entered the water safely
......................as the 'ol gator swam away . . ..
